How to transfer your domain away from Wix
Step by step, from Wix's own instructions: getting the EPP code, the 60-day rules, what happens to your Wix site and business email, and how to keep everything working through the move.
Short answer: first copy your DNS records and turn off Private Registration. Then, on Wix's Domains page, click Domain Actions next to the domain and choose Transfer away from Wix. Wix emails the EPP code to the registrant contact.
Give the code to your new registrar. It usually takes up to 7 days. You can't transfer within 60 days of buying the domain, changing its contact details or a previous transfer. Your Wix site is disconnected and you have to re-add your email's MX records.
Everything below is from Wix's own transfer guide unless another source is linked. Only the site owner, or an admin co-owner who holds the payment method and has the domain in their account, can do it.
Before you start
- Copy your DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT). After the transfer, the domain's DNS is managed at the new registrar, and your email only works once its MX records are added there again.
- Turn off Private Registration, as Wix recommends, so you don't miss transfer emails, and check that the registrant contact email is one you can read.
- Decide what happens to the site. Wix says that if you transfer your domain away, "your Wix site is disconnected". Either have the new site ready, or plan to connect the domain back to Wix from the new registrar.
- Sort out email first if you bought Google Workspace through Wix (see below).
Step by step
- Make sure the domain is unlocked; Wix says it "must be unlocked before you begin the transfer".
- Go to the Domains page in your Wix account.
- Click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain and select Transfer away from Wix.
- Click Transfer Domain, then I Still Want to Transfer.
- Wix emails the EPP (authorization) code to the registrant contact email. Enter it at your new registrar to start the transfer.
- Wait. Wix says the transfer "usually takes up to 7 days" and it can't speed it up.
- When it completes, add your DNS records at the new registrar, including the MX records, and test the website and email.
An expired domain can still be transferred while it's in its grace period. After the transfer, renewals are charged at the new registrar's prices.
The 60-day rules
| You can't transfer for 60 days after… | Why |
|---|---|
| Buying the domain | Wix: "You cannot transfer a domain within 60 days of purchase." |
| Changing the registrant contact details | A change of registrant locks the domain for 60 days. |
| A previous transfer | A completed transfer locks the domain for 60 days. |
These follow ICANN's Transfer Policy (ICANN). ICANN's Board adopted changes in June 2026 that will cut the windows to 30 days and drop the lock after a registrant change, but they don't have an effective date yet, so plan on 60 days (ICANN Board resolution, June 7, 2026).
Wix business email and Google Workspace
If your mailbox is Google Workspace bought through Wix, Wix's FAQ says you can move it to Google directly by contacting Wix Customer Care. This "disconnects the Workspace business email from your Wix account" and is "an irreversible action". Two other points from the same FAQ: cancelling your Wix plan or deleting your site "does not cancel your Google Workspace subscription", which keeps renewing until you turn off auto-renew (Wix: Google Workspace FAQs).
Whatever your email provider, the domain transfer moves the DNS. Wix's guide says "You need to add the MX records again after the transfer in order for the business email to work", and Google's admin help says the same for Workspace (Google Workspace admin help). Add your SPF, DKIM and DMARC records back too: see SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
Moving to Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap or Shopify
| New registrar | What to know |
|---|---|
| Cloudflare | The domain must already use Cloudflare for DNS (full setup) before you can transfer it, so move the DNS first. Pricing is at cost, and it takes up to 10 days (Cloudflare). |
| GoDaddy | Most transfers take 5 to 7 days; you keep the remaining time and get another year added (GoDaddy). |
| Namecheap | Pending transfers auto-confirm within 5 days, plus 24 to 48 hours at the registry (Namecheap). |
| Shopify | Your Shopify account email can't be on the domain you're moving. Shopify doesn't copy custom DNS records, and it can take up to 20 days (Shopify). |
For most domains, such as .com, a transfer adds a year to your current expiry date, so you keep the time you've paid for.
If you're leaving Wix altogether
Moving the domain is the easy part. Wix sites must run on Wix's servers, so the site itself has to be rebuilt elsewhere, and Wix says blog posts can't currently be exported. Our guide to moving off Squarespace or Wix covers what you can take with you and the redirects that keep your Google rankings. Wix's own redirects stop working once the domain points elsewhere, so the new site has to carry them.

Common questions
How do I get the EPP code for my Wix domain?
On Wix's Domains page, click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain, choose Transfer away from Wix, then Transfer Domain and I Still Want to Transfer. Wix emails the EPP code to the domain's registrant contact email.
Why can't I transfer my Wix domain?
Wix doesn't allow a transfer within 60 days of purchase, within 60 days of a change to the registrant contact details, or within 60 days of a previous transfer. Only the site owner, or a co-owner who holds the payment method and the domain, can start it.
How long does a Wix domain transfer take?
Wix says it usually takes up to 7 days, and it can't speed it up. A Whois lookup shows "pending transfer" once it has started.
What happens to my Wix site when I transfer the domain?
Wix says your Wix site is disconnected from the domain. To keep the site on Wix, connect the domain back to it from the new registrar; to leave Wix, have the new site ready before you transfer.
How do I move my Wix email to Google?
If your Google Workspace mailbox was bought through Wix, contact Wix Customer Care to move it to Google directly. Wix says this is irreversible. After the domain transfer, add the MX records again at the new registrar or the email stops working.
Does cancelling Wix cancel my Google Workspace email?
No. Wix says cancelling your Wix plan or deleting your site doesn't cancel Google Workspace; it keeps renewing until you turn off auto-renew.
